USTB-DMU Confucius Institute Held Calligraphy and Painting Workshop, Commencing 9th Anniversary Celebrations

On 26th June 2023, the USTB-DMU (De Montfort University) Confucius Institute (CI) held a calligraphy and painting workshop at the CI library, with students of the CI and local residents participating in the event.

The calligraphy and painting workshop at DMU CI has always been popular among students and local residents. Although the event was on a busy Monday, all the participants arrived on time to immerse themselves in the charm of traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting.
CI teacher Ms. ZHAO Xiaoke first explained Chinese traditional painting to the participants and discussed the main differences between Chinese and Western painting, emphasizing that the essence of Chinese painting lies in expressing artistic conception. Ms. ZHAO also introduced the tools required for Chinese painting and showcased exquisite Chinese paintings. Then, she led the students in painting bamboo and pandas. The students have fully enjoyed themselves.

After the students finished their painting, CI teacher Ms. ZHAI Shuliang explained Chinese calligraphy, illustrating several different styles of Chinese calligraphy and explaining the evolution of modern Chinese characters from Oracle Bone Script to Small Seal Script, Clerical Script, Seal Script, and Regular Script. Ms. ZHAI introduced the four treasures of the study, traditional Chinese stationery, and taught the students the correct way to hold a brush pen. Starting with the character "福" (fú), Miss Zhai explained its special cultural meaning: "福" represents good wishes; and during the New Year, people write the character "福" and stick it on their doors, hoping to get blessings and good luck in the new year. All participates had a chance to write their own character "福."
This week coincides with the 9th anniversary of the DMU CI. This calligraphy and painting workshop has officially kicked off the 9th anniversary celebration of the Confucius Institute.
