About Us

Introduction

The Confucius Institute (CI) is a non-profit public educational institution jointly established by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) and De Montfort University (DMU). As a vibrant celebration of the Chinese language and culture for all, the CI offers a wide choice of Mandarin teaching programs and a large variety of inspiring activities including tour exhibitions, special lectures, music and instruments, dance and costumes, tea and ceremonies, and characters and calligraphy, paper cutting and folding, Tai Chi and wellbeing, operas, and films, etc. Both formal and informal Mandarin lessons are offered to DMU students and many of them have successfully passed Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK, YCT, etc.) exams. The CI teachers also hold classes and activities in the wider local community, including long-term Mandarin lessons, after-school clubs, China Day/Week, road shows, and cultural festivals to help more students develop their cultural awareness and encourage more people to take part in CI activities.

The CI has already been an integral part of #DMUlocal and #DMUglobal, offering language and cultural learning opportunities not only at DMU but also at USTB and Beijing to provide DMU students with valuable international opportunities and innovative study experiences on both campuses. The CI has also been endeavoring to do more to enrich the diversity already celebrated on DMU campus, in Leicester and in Leicestershire.

The CI has made great efforts in cooperation with all possible resources, both local and international, and made substantial achievements in terms of updating management and platforms, deepening and widening integration into DMU, uplifting CI public image, and facilitating more substantial and multiple-dimensional collaborations between USTB & DMU.

The CI stays true to its mission in the future as always: to meet the growing demands of Chinese learners to the utmost degree, to contribute to local cultural diversity and harmony, and to become a more powerful force for good to more people.
