During the visit, the exchange meeting between the British Council and USTB was held in the Institute for Carbon Neutrality of our university. Prof. MAO Xinping, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of the Carbon Neutrality Research Institute, and Prof. LYU Zhaoping, Vice President of USTB, attended the meeting.
Prof. LYU Zhaoping made a welcome speech
Prof. LYU Zhaoping briefly introduced USTB’s overall situation and said that as an important institution for promoting international cultural exchanges and cooperation, the British Council has been committed to facilitating in-depth exchanges and cooperation among different countries in fields such as education, culture and art for a long time. He pointed out that this exchange would bring us valuable international perspectives and experience sharing and help us explore potential cooperation opportunities.
Dr. Jen Bradsley made a speech
Dr. Jen Bardsley said that they will establish a closer cooperative relationship with the Institute for Carbon Neutrality of USTB, promote technological innovation and the transformation of achievements, and jointly contribute to the development of carbon neutrality field.
Subsequently, the two sides exchanged views on issues related to industrial carbon neutrality under the background of global carbon neutrality. The Institution of Carbon Neutrality briefly outlined its basic construction situation, and introduced in detail the six low-carbon technology paths of China’s steel industry facing carbon neutrality, including the improvement of system energy efficiency, the recycling and utilization of resources, the innovation of process optimization, breakthroughs in smelting processes, the iterative upgrading of products, and carbon capture, utilization and storage technology. It emphasized the carbon reduction potential of emerging technology such as short-process electric furnace smelting and hydrogen-based smelting, as well as the significant contribution of the high-quality utilization of recycled steel raw materials to emission reduction. The two sides also fully exchanged views on the potential cooperation areas and possible cooperation forms between China and the UK in the field of carbon neutrality, and reached a consensus on strengthening talent and technology exchanges in the future and establishing a long-term cooperation mechanism.
Prof. MAO Xinping made a concluding speech
In his concluding speech, Prof. MAO Xinping deeply analyzed the core issues in the field of carbon neutrality and proposed his suggestions and insights, which pointed out a direction for the future research and key work focuses of the Institution of Carbon Neutrality. He emphasized that China and the UK are the leaders and pioneers in carbon neutrality in the iron and steel industry. The international cooperation between the two countries will play an important role in promoting the development in the field of carbon neutrality. It is necessary to continuously strengthen the cooperation and exchanges between our university and colleges with domestic and foreign universities, scientific research institutions and enterprises, so as to further promote the innovation and application of carbon neutrality technology.
This exchange has further deepened the mutual understanding between the two sides, and broadened the scope and depth of the cooperation, laying a solid foundation for future research and development.
